I happen to love Valentine's Day. It always reminds me of my grandma - who always made the sweetest Valentine's for us - vintage & antique. Such sweet sentiments & illustrations. Remind me someday to share some of the antique Valentine's of hers.

When it comes to my busy schedule - I tend to yearn for a few extra hours in my {Valentine's} day to make a few sweet cards and share them with my loved ones. It seems to elude me each year.

What I HAVE managed to come up with, is our 2nd annual Valentine's Day bookmark offerings! Here are Max's and Sam's Valentine's this year... and if you are {LUCKY enough to be} in one of their classes - sorry to spoil the surprise!

I finally managed to dig into the entire photography session with 6-month old Miss M, and here, at last, are my personal favorites... Well, in addition, of course, to the ones I've posted previously (here and here!)

I loved this session for so many reasons... but most of all because it took place this family's home - where she was surrounded by familiar settings and the images will all reflect a sense of home, rather than somewhere unfamiliar. Twenty years from now she'll look back and they'll just FEEL like home.

I look forward to catching up with this family almost as much as I do my own! Big sister has come in often enough that she knows the drill - give me a few good smiles - and I'll take a few goofy ones in return. We've got a good understanding {love ya, Miss M!}

Then there's the star of this show... Mr. O.

His big brown eyes had me from the very beginning... and I must say they get bigger and bigger each session this year!

Since Valentine's Day is upon us - we decided to have some {lovable} fun with a few silly props. I think it works - and certainly tells the story of when Mr. O turned 9 months old.

Happy Friday!

I'm bummed I didn't get to all of Miss M's 6 month shoot, but I did want to at least share these images to celebrate a Friday well-earned! They sure put a smile on my face!

This little princess was a trooper for over an hour of costume changes and smiles and giggles... and that, my friends, is a lot of work for a little being only 6 months in the world. I'm fairly certain mom and dad had a nice long break after this shoot as she napped it off!

I loved these images in this warm sepia tones... such a nice feel for a smiling little princess! I just may have to play around with these tones some more!

I'm leaving you with a parting shot, however, of 2 of our last frames together at the end of our session.
I'll let her tell you how she was feeling...

I'll admit it. I'm exhausted. It's been a long week, and I came down with a cold the night after this event. I am certain because my body was just tired from getting this show together (in addition to the normal wear and tear of my life).

So, here I am in the final stretch of this PTA Reflections Art Show marathon - eeking out just enough energy to wrap up the bits and pieces of what happens next (paper work, distributing artwork back to the students - sorting out the bag of "stuff" I grabbed in case we needed it during the hanging and judging - almost worse than my junk drawer at home).

{sigh}

I'm tired.

And then... I take a peek at the photos I took both getting ready for, and during the show (hang in there - they're down there...).

Color returns to my face, and I am motivated to dive into my bag of "stuff!"

Volunteering is like that, no? I'll admit it. Going into my kids' classrooms every week can sometimes be the last thing I'm interested in doing. Oh, the editing I could do. The dishes can be done. Calls I could make. Heck... I could relax!

And then... in the first 5 minutes in the classroom - color returns to my face - and I'm so, so thankful to be able to spend that time helping out. Blessed my schedule allows it.

I'm happy to share my motivation here... images from the first annual PTA Reflections Regional Art Show during the Last Saturday Art Walk at Studio 3. Truly worth their weight in gold - please take a moment and peek through them... it was a joy to see the pride in the student's faces as they showed family and friends their artwork, and I know they'd be tickled to know you dropped by here as well! Not all family portraits need to be in a studio - or out in some grassy field.

Sometimes - what you want to capture can be done during a simple morning at home. I was given that opportunity by this family - and I was thrilled to create these images for them. Truly - my idea of the perfect session!

I just got done putting our 2011 family album together - and I noticed that there's been a shift in our family photographs. Several years ago - there were so many great candid photos. I used to take my camera (my good, pro camera) everywhere. I'd grab shots of nearly everything we do. In the last year or so - not as much. There were way fewer images of us just hanging out, or things around the house.

Don't get me wrong - there were tons of great images of our family... but not the ones I really love. The ones that tug on the Mama Gene every time I see them. These are the images (truth be told) that typically make my Black and White gallery wall in my home. Little moments. Goofy faces.

{sigh} I love my family. My boys are knuckle heads.

So. I've decided {not resolved - too easy to ignore}, to keep the good camera handy again. Grab the little shots I love. Like this morning. Not THIS morning... but the morning you see here. Thank goodness I've trained my boys well. I was so gratified and thankful when I sneak up on these two having serious Lego Negotiations over dividing a long-lost box of Legos - click the shutter... and without any pause in their action, without turning a head, nor batting an eye (that I could tell), I hear a "oh, hi Mom!"

And the negotiations continue...

What a great day for SCONES!

It's a cold, blustery Snow-Day Wednesday, and it seems to be the perfect day to write about something indulgent!

My love affair with scones started many years ago. Nineteen, in fact.

It was my junior year at Willamette University and I spent it in London with a handful of other American college students on exchange. What a semester. It was a fantastic program - we had culture coming out of our ears... I developed a love of several things British:

Guinness.

Tea (with milk).
I drink this every day since coffee no longer agrees with me... I prefer regular ol' Tetley British Tea. Great flavor.

Scones.

My favorites are the classic British scones - not too sweet - with currants. I really don't care for the ones in stores that try to be dry, crumbly muffins. I love the classic scone flavors. I've yet to find the perfect scone here... and I try plenty.

This is the scone book I've had forever. Like most recipe books - we've settled into our favorites... and the Jam-Filled Walnut Scones have earned top-spot at the Teichrow household.

My cooking style tends to be a bit loose (dash of this, splash of that...), but not when it comes to baking. Here's the precise recipe - sorry. Too lazy to retype.

If you've never made scones - follow the photographs for tips I've found helpful for successful scones.

My pantry is stocked with most of the ingredients for these scones, except buttermilk. When that goes in the shopping cart - my boys get excited. They know what's coming in the morning!

I think one of the main techniques to get a feel for is cutting in the chilled butter. This is the dough just nearly done. You can still see some chunks of butter (real, unsalted butter - don't go healthy with margarine....). I gave this a few more turns with the pastry blender before I added the buttermilk & vanilla. NOTE: I've used 2 butter knives to cut in the butter as well... works just as well.

Mix the dough JUST until combined. Don't over mix. This is another part where you'll just have to get a feel for it (and shoot... make a few batches YUM). Keep some flour on hand for when you press into the larger circle. Use a serrated knife to cut into equal triangles - and again, cut slits for the jam (see below).

This seems to work great for me. Two teaspoons - I scoop a bit of jam in one, then open the slit up with both and scrape the jam with the other. Pictures are so much easier to illustrate this, no?
NOTE: Some recipes call for baking the scones as you see here - together, and not separated. I think you could do either for this recipe - but personally, I like the crispy edges and tender middle, so we separate the scones. If you bake them together, you may need to bake for the longer time....

More for a pretty picture... here they are separated and ready to put on the cookie sheet (lightly buttered - but you could use parchment paper or a silpat). You can see the chunks of butter still intact... this makes for flaky yumminess!

Be careful to not slit the scones too far in the back (do as I say, not as I do... this one was cut a bit far back). The only issue, the jam can dribble out of the back.

Ready to bake.

Ready to EAT! See, they do puff out a bit.

Perfectly yummy. Watch the baking time. While my husband disagreed.... I thought these cooked about 2 minutes too long. I went for 19 instead of 17.

A note on the photography: As professional photographer, of course I pride myself on my photographs. As a mom, I like to keep things simple. I've bridged the gap and have shot this particular session during a busy Sunday morning preparing breakfast for the family with my "point and shoot" camera - my Canon G12. I love this thing, and I hope you love the images.

No, you aren't seeing double – meet Rex & Cinnamon. They are our 3 year old Shih-Tzu's... well technically they belong to our boys (this designation really helps in the chore department). And yes, they are way overdue for some love from Kelly at Precious Paws!

They actually don't really like looking at the camera - and they need bribes to do it.

I love food. I love to have time to plan for meals, shop for ingredients and lovingly prepare balanced tasty & beautiful food for my family in a warm and aromatic kitchen. However, more often than not, I find myself frantically scouring the fridge for something that will somewhat resemble an evening meal for my family. Thank goodness for a stocked pantry. Oh, my poor husband who often walks in from a long day at work to a cold kitchen.

{sigh}

I know many of you are fans of Pinterest - the (relatively) new virtual bulletin board phenomenon. I'll admit I'm addicted. I love the beautiful photos of all sorts of inspiring things. Not the least of which are recipes. Beautiful, yummy-looking recipes. Gorgeous photography of food & techniques.

I'll admit - I'm "Pin-spired."

I've recently tried out delicious zucchini "boats," energy bars & I'm dying to try these roasted swedish potato things... Mmmmm.

Yes. I love food.

I also happen to love photography. I have found myself thinking in terms of Pins - and combining some of our family favorites with beautiful photography & throwing it up there on Pinterest.

So, why not live the dream, right? Really, my intention isn't to turn this blog into the next Pioneer Woman
(good golly - I'm not nearly that polished!) - but I do think it will be a fun creative project to post a recipe now and again - paired with great photography. And, if a few of you happen to throw it up on Pinterest...
Oh my. I think I'd just about pass out.

Here's my recipe for tabouli,

Marianne - it's pronounced tuh-boo-lee

a mediterranean salad my mom has made for years

(and just so happens to be both yummy and healthy).

Recipe follows the photos, and bear with me, my style of recipe writing isn't an exact science.

Did I mention I love parsley?

Viola! Tabouli. You can get a sense of proportions that I like from this image... lots of parsley, not too many grains.

You'll need:
– bulgar wheat (about 1 cup dry - then cook it - here's how - not to mention all you ever need to know about Tabouli, including all 18 ways to spell it & about 20 variations on the recipe!).
– 1 bunch of fresh parsley - rinsed and chopped well.
– 1 can garbanzo beans, I rinse mine
– tomatoes... diced to your liking. Amount, to your liking... for this I typically use a big handful of grape tomatoes diced in about 4 pieces each. Sometimes its simply a matter of what I've got on hand.
– Juice from 1-2 lemons (avoid the seeds)
– Olive oil. Oh man, I drizzle until just right (helpful, no?). I think I'd start with 3-4 T... if it tastes dry - add a bit more.
– Salt and pepper to taste

Mix it all up. Its best if you let it marinate at least an hour. It can tend to dry out the next day - as the wheat soaks up the dressing. Have extra lemon and olive oil handy to refresh.

Play with the proportions. I added fresh mint to my last batch (I happened to have it on hand and needed to use it up). I also love fresh parsley... but some folks prefer the recipe heavier on the grains, and lighter on the greens.

Oh so graceful... I think I'd snap in two.

Circles Colliding!

I love working with folks I know from other circles in my life! It's particularly fun when I adore them!

Meet Grace & Joni - two beautiful women who work at my boys' school (GO Jewell Jaguars!). They fell behind my lens (and in front of the Sparkle Lights!) over the holidays at the annual Home for the Holiday's party - and I'm so glad!

This was such a great event - festive and beautiful - and it immediately hurled me about 10 years into my future when my boys are coming home from college for Christmas. To be honest - I'm not sure how I really felt about that part - but I will say it did bless me with a very real sense of how quickly time passes -and how much I enjoy my young (but not tiny) boys.

Thanks Grace, for the invitation... and for wrangling your young fella in front of the lens! He's a handsome one!

Family History - a Pearl Harbor first-hand account

I have boys. Of course I'm protective of them as they grow and experience life. But, I'm not so certain that compares to the feelings a father feels for his daughter. I know I'm making generalizations, but I do think it must be a little different...

For that very reason I'm in love with this image of a father holding his baby girl. I can imagine him protecting her throughout her entire life - with those caring, gentle & strong hands.

You know how dogs love to stick their heads out of a car window and just let the wind throw their ears back? For me, that seems to evoke the simple joy of living... last night - I got to stick MY head out of my car window (don't worry, I'm being figurative).

Along with most photographers in town, I'm in the middle of the Fall Portrait season - and its been busy. Combined with a busy household & sports schedules - I'll admit I feel BUSY. While it doesn't take away from the fun I have when working with clients - I found myself yesterday shooting simply for the love of it. And it was fun.

The stars aligned (schedule, weather & model) and I was able to play with lil' Miss M. Thanks, mama Jenna for bringing her out to play!

A themed photo shoot - Celebrate!

My partners & I at Studio 3 just celebrated our first year in business together. To celebrate, we threw ourselves a birthday bash during the Last Saturday Art Walk in the Old Ironworks District, and decided to show each of our interpretations of the word "Celebrate" in photos.

While I'm accustomed to shooting for assignments for True North Parenting, I'm not necessarily used to shooting along a creative theme - and it took a bit for me to wrap my head around how I wanted to approach this task.

If you're interested, here was my thought process - and if you're not, no worries... skip straight to the photographs below.

For me photography has always been about my family. My passion is truly being able to capture images of our lives together, and be able to share, reflect & preserve them for future generations. It was a logical conclusion for me, then, to tie the word "Celebrate" into some sort of family activity.

We'd played around with light painting, off camera flash, and long exposures last summer, and I wanted to see what we could do with it in studio. The boys thought it was fun to act and freeze in silly poses while I ran around and drew in the air with a flashlight - and my dad (a wonderful photographer of "things that don't move " ~ his words) was in town as well... a perfect combination, right?

Well, the best laid plans...

Together, we got the studio set up, tested out a 10 second exposure and were ready to play. My dad manned the shutter release, my husband served as the timer & protector of lights... and I tried, in vane, to literally paint with light while our squirmy boys did their best to not knock over anything. It turned into a bit of a circus - as we had limited time to get it right, the batteries wavered in the flashlight - and the fuse of the mama got shorter and shorter, until it was simply time to go home on this school night and call it a day.

I was fairly convinced we didn't get anything I would have been proud to display - until I called upon my trusty tablet... and my love of drawing.

While you can see the light painting in the blue present image below (the glowy white light behind the blue) - I've pretty much covered up the rest of the evidence of the light painting with playful drawings of images the boys came up with when they thought of what it means to Celebrate.

In the end - these images are perfect in their imperfections. It wasn't what I had envisioned in the beginning, but it was a beautiful lesson for myself that it's not about the destination - but about the journey.

And for me, this particular journey with my family is truly a reason to Celebrate.

Teacher Appreciation Wednesday

It's Wednesday, which means I get to into each of my boys' classrooms for a bit and help out for about an hour each. I always come away feeling connected to my boys' school experience - and so incredibly thankful for our teachers - and how much time & energy they spend teaching my children.

While I've technically set Wednesdays aside as a "no work" day - I do feel called to share a bit about their classrooms in appreciation. Don't be surprised if it becomes a habit.

Apparently colored pencils wreak havoc on pencil sharpeners... and can dull them in no time flat. Which could certainly be why there was a big pile of unsharpened colored pencils in Sam's classroom today. The sharpening fairy came and took care of these guys... but I wonder if your child's classroom could use a visit from the sharpening fairy as well?

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to get a visit from one of my favorite models - Miss Baby K! She's getting so big & and still just as cute as ever...

I was reminded of those shirts you see "My Aunt went to Ireland and all I got was this lousy T-shirt." when she dropped by, though...

This gorgeous bit of yumminess came by the studio and all I had was my lousy iPhone camera! Well... this picture can attest to her cuteness... phone-cam and all! I even got to pinch those cheeks! Yay!

Boys will be boys - but it doesn't mean the Mama's heart can't skip a few beats in the mean time! They wanted to use their pocket knives to sharpen their pencils - and although the supervision typically falls to my husband - he was at work and it fell to me. SO... I grab my trusty camera. Took a deep breath and let them practice.

All in all they showed great judgement (thanks to the groundwork laid by both their grandpa & father)... but I was there to make darned sure no blood was lost.

Mission accomplished.

Now - for a glass of wine.

Phew.

First Day of School - and settling into a season.

There is a collective sigh of relief across Central Oregon - as Super Moms, Dads & other caregivers have sent their kiddos off to school. You'll hear mine just as loud as the others.

I do love this time of year. Following a crazy hectic (fun) summer, it always feels nice to settle into a bit of structure and routine.

Good luck to all of you school employees (one and all) out there - taking care of our children... and best of luck super parents in getting yourselves back on track. Then again, maybe its just me who needs a nudge towards structure?

I've been dying to share this collection of images from the August Last Saturday Art Tour at the Old Ironworks district. Allison Dickerson of Allura Henna was presented with this beautiful belly and free reign for a design. Simply elegant - I think she did a wonderful job of creating this art. The belly belongs to Sarah and Chad Fox - one of our Old Ironworks artist/neighbors at Cindercone Clay Center.

I love, LOVE that this artist, who uses his hands to create amazing clay works, is seen here, holding one of his greatest creations. You can see his other works here, at his website.

As a creative person - I appreciate all types of art and am a big fan in particular of artists I get to meet in person and have a personal connection with.

David and I often bring back local art from places we travel. I LOVE my hand carved wooden tiki mask we picked up in Maui for our 10th anniversary. Here is a gallery of the artist carving his signature into our piece in the open air market in Lahaina. We've also blown our own glass floats in Newport, Oregon (the gal helping us was an amazing craftsperson). I can't tell you how many pieces of jewelry I pick up on our travels (but my husband may be able to!). In fact - the brown and brass bracelet you see below is form our recent walk through Pike's Market!

Bringing talented henna artist, Allison Dickerson of Allura Henna for Studio 3's Last Saturday Art Tour was a perfect opportunity to experience this new (to me) type of artwork up close and very personal!

I have loved my own personal canvas for the last week - and am quite certain to work with Allison in the future... I'm seeing special henna for my birthday - maybe the holiday parties... New Year's Eve!

A bit of personal history... and another reason why I do what I do.

Four by four, I've been scanning photographs in honor of my wedding anniversary all day today. My husband was reflecting fondly on some not-so old pictures while the boys and I were away - so I thought it was high time I scanned my pictures from the time I met David, until I went full-digital. Shhh... he doesn't know yet - it's his surprise after work! Popcorn and digital slideshow on the "big" screen!

This image was in a stack of older pictures - and like many my dad has taken over the years - I love it.

It's a classic image - one that nearly anyone can relate to. All the more special that its of my mom, brother and I circa 1974.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I'm so thankful that my family has so many wonderful images in our history. Dating back to the late 1800's in fact. Having just gone through our recent history - I'm hoping the boys love the fact that we have so many of our moments documented... I know I've loved reminiscing this afternoon, and I can't wait to show my honey tonight!

Iconic Seattle – A Pike’s Place Market Tour

With so many displays of colorful fruits, flowers and vegetables – who couldn’t walk away with a few beautiful photographs?

Like shooting fish in a barrel, though, most are a bit predictable, fairly easy to capture – and similar to most other images you may have seen. But here’s the good news: like your all-time favorite movie from your teenage years – they’re still fun to look at!

Here are my top 10 photographs (in no particular order) from last week’s walkabout with my favorite shooting partner, my husband, David.

Note: As I'm still struggling with tennis elbow (should call it "photographer's elbow!") - I opted for my much smaller lens - the 50mm 1.4. I do love that lens, and am actually thankful for the excuse to use it!

We ate dinner at the waterfront last night with 3 other couples, and it was a gorgeous evening. I wasn't planning on taking any pictures - and only had my G12.

Well, I wasn't feeling all that great, and my dinner got ignored, so what else could I do?

Moonlight Play

We're in the middle of a fantastic August in Washington... and while most of this vacation is a camera-vacation - I did break out the tripod & made some long exposures this beautiful moonlit night.

I call this "Max Walks Through Camp With Lantern."

You can see his red checkered PJ bottoms, a hint of the teal flannel top (no fashion judgements please - we are camping!) - and best of all, the rhythm of his steps as the lantern sways with the cadence, lighting up the campsite around him - including the tree we are sitting beneath. I love that the sky looks blue - almost dusk-like... but it was far beyond sunset - and the sky is purely it by the moonlight and a 4 second exposure.

I'm certain I'll be adding posts to my travel blog - Wildfire, about this trip, in case you'd like to see more images from Chelan.

We travel to Lake Chelan every August, and typically it is a camera vacation for me - but this year it just so happened that my husband's cousin was wanting some pictures taken, and just so happens to live on our way to Chelan, in the Yakima Valley. She suggested the beautiful Yakima Arboretum as a venue - and I'm so glad she did. It was a beautiful evening, and I had 3 extra assistants helping out (Thanks boys!).

Bend's own competes in Hershey, PA - GO DAWSON!

This week, I'd like all of you to go out and buy a Hershey Chocolate bar. Go out and support this company - as they are doing some amazing things for kids.

Meet Dawson - Bend's own High Desert Middle Schooler (and family friend), who just completed his first of 4 full days in Hershey, PA competing with kids from across the country at the Hershey Track & Field North American Finals. At no cost to the families, students from across the country have gathered in PA to meet, compete and play together from August 4-7. They get to not only compete, but are treated to special tours of the chocolate factory, amusement park visits, extra competition shirts to trade with the other competitors & a souvenir stipend.

So, please take a moment, eat some chocolate and think good thoughts for our Central Oregon competitor!

In my world (which is admittedly pretty small), it is well known that I typically photograph young folks.

I was working at an event last weekend, and had the pleasure of running into this gentleman for the second year in a row, same event. Now, I'm prepared to admit that don't recall his name (I'm so sorry, mystery fella), and I'd like to to share that I have a great respect for him - he was one of the auctioneers for a charity auction. They were amazing to watch - and I'm pleased to have captured this moment before he went to work - raising money for a wonderful non-profit organization.

Technicolor Personalities

I'm sort of a purist when it comes to developing my images... I don't do a ton of post processing, nor do I spend a lot of time fiddling around with different looks. I like my images clean, colorful and relying on the moment captured for any WOW factor.

After our day at Detroit lake with good friends - I threw all of that out the window, and am in love with this image. The different personalities, the colors, the time of day - and the story. Maybe you need to know all of these knuckleheads to appreciate the image fully - but I don't think so. I think it touches on a few universal elements we can all appreciate. What do you think?

Celebrating a beautiful marriage!

I had such a great time with this family out in Sunriver last week. They were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with a family reunion - and were lucky enough to be enjoying some of the first fine weather of the summer.

Well, that is of course until this evening, which proved a bit chilly. But, we persevered and came through with some fantastic family memories - particularly thanks to my lovely assistant, fellow photographer Tambi Lane, who was quite the charmer that evening!

I sure hope this is the picture of MY family 37 years from now!

I shot this a few years ago on a trip to Vegas sans-kids and sans-big camera. I do love it, my husband and I were on a shuttle from our time-share and headed up to see a show. It was slow going (as you can see from the traffic) but the colors and sights were plenty to keep us occupied on the march through the Strip.

We're heading out for our annual Vegas Vacation with the kids (yes, absolutely - this could be a very cheesy movie!), and I'm pretty excited. I'm energized creatively - and I really can't wait to just drop everything that's been cluttering my head lately and make some amazing images! I've even got 3 boys who enjoy doing the same and I can't wait to get started!

A great way to kick off summer... wouldn't you say?

Really - the sight of Tulips surrounded by frozen white stuff is a pretty common sight in these parts. This frozen white stuff happens to be a round of hail - captured just minutes ago, and is currently being melted by a round of slushy rain. I guess I'll count myself lucky to have captured this shot before it became a wet mess.

I'm also counting myself lucky that we're having a mellow weekend, and not out camping in the elements. For all of you who are indeed braving the Central Oregon crap-shoot known as Spring Camping - I'm raising a hot steamy cup of coffee to you - Way to Go!

Good Friends

I'm having lunch today with a good friend... in fact its taken us nearly 3 months to make this lunch date (a birthday treat for me). It really shouldn't have taken so long to schedule this - but I'm grateful for my good friend, and the fact that she's so patient with my busy schedule.

It got me thinking about the good friends we have as a family, and some really great times we've had together. These are two images I wanted to share of such times.

This image (above) was taken up at Lake Chelan, Washington on our 3rd annual camping trip with our "old" playgroup. The six oldest kiddos have known each other since they were 3 months old... and now the kids number 13! It is a fun week, and a wonderful opportunity to slow down and catch up with friends we don't get to see very often, because we moved so far away. In this photo, we had settled the kids down at night, outside, by lantern light, with a book on tape. Percy Jackson held their rapt attention... as they drifted off to sleep in no time at all – and the adults got to enjoy the quiet crackle of the campfire.

This image (below), was taken two years ago at North Twin lake, here in Central Oregon. We celebrated the beginning of summer by immediately heading out on a week long camping adventure. It was a magical week... with young puppies in love (literally), good ol' Central Oregon summer thunderstorms, lots of hot chocolate, dirt & best of all - great friends.

I encourage all of you to take a moment and celebrate the friendships in your lives. I know I can get too busy and wrapped up in the now, to really think about and appreciate the special people in my life that don't live under my own roof. I hope they know I love them... because I do!

Spring Snow - It happens every year!

It seems every year we yearn for warm, spring sunshine, and every year we are disheartened with spring snow. I say - find the beauty in it! Grab a warm cup of Chai... your favorite blanket and someone to snuggle with!

Two years ago, this was our back yard, and it was nearly May when I took these! The pups were actually puppies, and Sam was enjoying the fresh globs of wet snow. I wonder what this May will bring?

Are we there yet?

Last week, Sam brought home a story he'd written in class, about a trip we had taken. His (fantastic) teacher was teaching the students about using a repeating line in a story - and Sam had chosen "Are we there yet?" as his repeating line. This is funny, because the boys rarely say this on our trips - but, as Sam pointed out, it made for an effective story. The second sentence in the story was, "NO! Stop pestering me!"

I felt a bit put out because, like the repeating line, I rarely say this phrase (if ever), and never with an exclamation point! Well, I asked Sam about it, he went on to point out that sometimes you add details to a story to make it more interesting.

Yes, that's my 7 year old.

So, clearly the phrase, "are we there yet" has been top of mind lately. I was looking through some of my spring photos from last year and came across this beauty. Immediately this came to mind:

In honor of the launch of my travel series on the Disneyland family vacation (which is published on True North Parenting's blog, The Map), I wanted to share one of my favorite images from our 2010 visit to the "Happiest place on earth."

This image takes me right back to Main Street, USA, warm sun on my back and the promise of a full day exploring all that Disneyland and California Adventure have to offer.

5-minute vacation, please!

For about 5 minutes, I'm going to breathe deeply, smell the warm salty air, and pretend I'm back on this black-sandy beach on Maui. I'm watching the boys play in the surf, find treasures, and wrestle with my husband. I'm taking photos that the boys will get to share with their children one day. My bones are warm, I'm relaxed and perfectly content. My to-do list has one item on it, and it's already marked off. Enjoy your day.

I have a dentist appointment today, and it reminded me of the time when Sam lost his first tooth. We'd been working on this stubborn thing for quite a while and daddy "helped" loosen up for the final extraction. I LOVE, love that I can see my son's emotion right there on his face. Incredulous. Wondrous. Fantastic.

Loose-Ends Monday

Spring Break was great, but I'm feeling like I have a TON of loose ends to tie up today! My To-Do list has 16 items at the moment, and I'm certain I've left off at least 10 more. Let's see how many I can cross off - starting with "Daily Blog Post" Check!

I have so much fun when my boys spend a few minutes under the lights for me. Last Saturday night was no exception! I was testing the lights for Max's party later in the night - and broke out our goofy glasses. Sam chose the LOVE glasses... and hammed it up for one tickled mama!

My good friend and admired colleague, Tambi Lane and I went today to Oasis Day Spa and the ever fantastic Annie Simmons created 2 masterpieces. I took a bit more work, as I went in for the full-hair transformation - and she came through (like she always does) with flying colors! I'm very lucky in that Miss Tambi Lane Photography captured my "after" shot. Isn't she fantastic?? Thanks Tambi!

A few folks have asked how I feel after this makeover...

Well. It has been a long 3-4 months of busy-ness, business, not feeling great, surgery, recovery, recovery, and working into feeling better oh so slowly. Finally, feeling better (thanks for asking), and while I still have my ups and downs (mostly dealing with what I can/can't eat and digestion stuff) - I am starting to feel like I am on the other side of my surgery.

Today - an almost spontaneous day of pampering and playing in studio - was wonderful. I DO feel amazing, and while I've got a to-do list a mile long - I'm very excited to go home tonight, and show my husband that I can look sassy after a long, long winter.

Although now, I've been told... I need to go shopping for smaller jeans.

It's not the Hokey Pokey... but that's what it's all about!
